Irrewarra 2018 Chardonnay

The Wine: Irrewarra 2018 Chardonnay

The Irrewarra Chardonnay is a deliciously mineral and slippery drink. An array of citrus and complexity lined with a fantastic backbone of acidity. Perhaps a bottle to be consumed by yourself.

2016 vintage – From the dry-grown vineyard of John and Bronwyn Calvert in the heart of the Western District of Vic. Has the usual Farr stamp of complexity from go to whoa, yet also has great purity and precision. Grapefruit and green apple lead the band, oak simply a vehicle for the fruit to express itself. 96 points, James Halliday

The Vineyards:

The vineyard was planted by the Calvert family in 2001 to a mixture of clones on own roots. It is predominantly pinot noir with 6 acres and accompanied by 2 acres of chardonnay.

The vineyard sits at the top of the slope facing large water reserves ‘Salt Lake’ and the ‘Calvert Lough’ to the north.

It is a site that shows great fruit expression with a deceptively long and mineral palate. Vintage occurs during April after quite a long growing season.

The Maker:

Nick Farr readily acknowledges the influence of his father in his winemaking and viticultural practices—however, these have been significantly enhanced by his own vast experience. While he was growing up, Nick often worked alongside his father on the family estate before a stint at Rosemount in the Hunter Valley in the late 90s. This was followed by more vintages with Gary as well as at Innisfail Vineyards in the Bannockburn area, where Nick commenced his label Farr Rising. Like his father, Nick has experience at international vineyards, including Cristom in Oregon, Au Bon Climate in California, and Domain Dujac in Burgundy.

Nick’s enthusiasm and passion for wine is captivating, and an excellent grounding in both the new and old schools of winemaking is the perfect complement to his individual tastes and ideas.

“The wines we make are not mainstream—they are expressions of our vineyard, our land and what we like to drink. That is what we promise to deliver.” Nick Farr.
