Geoff Merrill 2011 ‘Reserve’ Shiraz

The Wine: Geoff Merrill ‘Reserve’ Shiraz

The Geoff Merril Shiraz is Dark red with great depth. The aroma really displays the best characteristics of this ripe vintage. It’s full of intense red berry fruit, chocolate, earth and leather.

The palate is voluptuous and seductive, initially appearing generous and inviting before revealing the serious structure beneath. Extended maturation both in barrel and bottle before release has allowed the wine to gain some sophistication and grace from what was a very rich and robust vintage.

“Matured for 32 months in French and American oak (60% new). McLaren Vale suffered far less from the wet vintage than the Barossa Valley, but I don’t understand the rationale of keeping a medium-bodied shiraz with a savoury path winding its way through the varietal fruit that needed protecting, not taming.” James Halliday

The Vineyards:

Geoff Merrill Wines has vineyards in two of Australia’s classic viticultural regions, Pimpala Vineyard and Wickham Downs in McLaren Vale.  As well as Graymoor in the Coonawarra. Individual growing conditions at each site provide an exciting opportunity to highlight the very best of what each region has to offer by skilfully blending single varietals such as McLaren Vale Shiraz and Coonawarra Cabernet for a superb result.
